1. The Battle You Never Saw
Jesus reveals that an invisible conversation had already taken place before Peter ever realised there was a battle.
Peter thought he was simply sharing a Passover meal.
Behind the scenes, heaven and hell were already speaking about him.
Our lives are often shaped by realities we cannot see.
Scripture pulls back the curtain to reveal that there is a spiritual dimension beyond our physical senses.
Key Insight
Many of life's greatest battles begin long before they become visible.
The Sifting
Jesus says:
"Satan has asked to sift you as wheat."
This teaches us several important truths:
Satan must ask.
He is not God's equal.
He operates under God's authority.
The enemy may shake us, but he cannot own us.
The illustration of wheat being sifted reminds us:
the shaking is real
the pain is real
the uncertainty is real
…but throughout the process the wheat never leaves the farmer's hands.
Practical Application
Your circumstances may feel unstable, but your life has never slipped from God's hands.
2. The Reality That Changes Everything
The entire passage turns on one glorious word:
"But…"
"But I have prayed for you."
Everything changes here.
The focus moves:
from Satan's request
to Christ's response.
Before Peter ever entered the battle...
Jesus had already entered it.
Before Peter ever failed...
Jesus had already prayed.
The Great Comfort
Our greatest security is not that we hold tightly to Christ.
Our greatest security is that Christ holds tightly to us.
Jesus is not reacting to our crises.
He is already there before we arrive.
Practical Application
When fear comes...
remember that Christ's prayers have already gone ahead of you.
3. Luke Was Never Meant to Be a One-Off
Jesus did not simply pray once for Peter.
His ministry of intercession continues today.
Hebrews 7:25 tells us that He:
"always lives to make intercession."
The cross happened once.
The resurrection happened once.
The ascension happened once.
But Christ's intercession continues every moment.
Practical Application
Right now...
Jesus is praying for His people.
His ministry did not finish at Calvary.
It continues from His throne.
4. The Voice Louder Than Your Failure
Romans 8 reminds us that Christ now stands at the Father's right hand interceding for us.
Every accusation Satan brings...
Christ answers with His finished work.
Peter failed.
Peter denied Jesus.
Peter wept bitterly.
Yet Jesus had already declared:
"When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
Failure was never Peter's final chapter.
Grace had already written the ending.
Practical Application
Your failure does not surprise Christ.
His prayers are greater than your worst moment.
The Central Invitation
The sermon invites us to stop measuring our security by:
the strength of our faith
our spiritual performance
our ability to keep holding on
…and instead rest in something infinitely stronger:
Jesus Christ is holding on to us.
Before the enemy ever spoke our name—
Jesus already had.
We were held before we fell.
