LWC SERMON GUIDE

FAN THE FLAME

Scriptures to Read and Ponder

  • 2 Timothy 1:5–7 — The main text. Paul reminds Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God.

Sermon Recap

1. God Has Put More In You Than You Realise

Paul begins by reminding Timothy of his inheritance before addressing his challenges.

  • Timothy's faith was sincere and genuine.

  • His faith had been passed down through Lois and Eunice.

  • Timothy was carrying a spiritual deposit entrusted to him.

  • Paul reminds him that God had already placed gifts within him.

  • The Christian life often begins by recognising what God has already done rather than focusing on what we lack.

Key Insight

The Kingdom of God is deeply relational and generational.

Faith is not merely something we possess. It is something we receive, steward, and pass on.

Application

  • Reflect on those who have invested spiritually in your life.

  • Recognise the deposits God has already placed within you.

  • Stop defining yourself by what you lack and begin thanking God for what you already carry.

2. The Tragedy of Unused Potential

Paul does not tell Timothy to seek a gift.

He tells him to stir up the gift he already has.

  • Potential alone changes nothing.

  • Calling alone changes nothing.

  • Gifts buried beneath fear, disappointment, or distraction remain ineffective.

  • The enemy is not intimidated by unrealised potential.

Key Insight

Potential only becomes powerful when it becomes active.

A dormant gift benefits no one.

Application

Ask yourself:

  • What has God entrusted to me?

  • Where have I become passive?

  • What step of obedience have I delayed?

3. What Extinguishes the Fire?

Most believers do not abandon God suddenly.

The fire usually cools gradually.

The sermon identified several fire-killers:

  • Disappointment

  • Discouragement

  • Busyness

  • Delayed answers to prayer

  • Shifting priorities

The image of the abandoned fireplace illustrated this powerfully.

  • The fireplace still existed.

  • The structure was intact.

  • The potential remained.

  • The fire was simply gone.

Key Insight

The greatest danger is not losing the fireplace.

The greatest danger is losing the fire.

Application

Consider where your spiritual life has cooled:

  • Prayer

  • Worship

  • Mission

  • Passion

  • Expectation

  • Faith

4. Fire Requires Wind

The image of "la manopla" became the central metaphor of the sermon.

Just as dying coals require fresh air, spiritual fire requires the breath of God.

Paul's instruction is not: "Start a fire."

It is: "Fan into flame."

The fire already exists.

Pneuma — Spirit, Wind, Breath

Throughout Scripture:

  • The Holy Spirit is associated with breath.

  • The Holy Spirit is associated with wind.

  • The Holy Spirit is associated with life.

Fire grows when the Spirit is given room to move.

How Do We Make Room?

The sermon highlighted several pathways:

  • Prayer

  • Worship

  • Obedience

  • Generosity

  • Kindness

  • Mission

  • Surrender

Key Insight

We cannot manufacture revival.

We can only position ourselves for the Spirit to breathe.

5. Fear Is the Fire's Greatest Enemy

Paul immediately follows his command with a warning about fear.

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear..."

Fear was limiting Timothy.

Fear still limits believers today.

Fear causes people to:

  • Stay silent

  • Stay small

  • Stay comfortable

  • Stay hidden

The Three-Legged Stool

Paul presents three stabilising realities:

  • Power: The courage and ability to act.

  • Love: A heart shaped by compassion and grace.

  • Self-Control (Sound Mind): A disciplined, well-regulated and steady life.

Together they create stability.

Remove one leg and the stool collapses.

Key Insight

Everything Timothy needed was already inside him through the Holy Spirit.

The same is true for us.

6. We Were Created to Burn

The sermon returned to the fireplace image.

  • A fireplace is built for fire.

  • It is designed for fire.

  • It exists for fire.

Likewise:

  • We were not created merely to survive.

  • We were not created to live cold.

  • We were created for holy purpose.

  • We were created for Kingdom impact.

  • We were created to carry God's presence.

Why Does God Want Us Burning?

Not for personal glory.

But so that we can bring:

  • Warmth to others

  • Light to others

  • Hope to others

  • Faith to others

Fire was never meant to stop with us.

7. The Fire Must Be Passed On

The conclusion returned to the generational theme.

The fire moved from:

  • Lois

  • Eunice

  • Timothy

The Gospel always moves forward.

We do not own the fire.

We steward it.

Others carried it before us.

Now it is our turn.

Final Challenge

  • What has cooled?

  • God is not staring at the ashes.

  • He is staring at the embers.

  • And where there are embers, there can be fire again.

Memorable Quotes

  • "The gift is God's responsibility. The fanning is where we play our part."

  • "Fire grows when the Spirit is given room to move."

  • "We cannot manufacture the fire; we can only create the conditions where fire thrives."

  • "Fear causes people to live beneath their calling."

  • "You were not created merely to survive."

  • "You were created to burn with holy purpose."

Prayer Points

  • Lord, thank You for every spiritual deposit You have placed within me.

Our calling is not to wait for more from God, but to give room for the Spirit to breathe upon what He has already entrusted to us, so that the fire burns brightly and is passed on to others.
